On May 31, 2015, after eight years in the Diocese of Fort Worth, the Friars at Sacred Heart Friary will be closing their doors and returning to their Community’s home base in New York City. With the original invitation from Bishop Kevin Vann, the former Bishop of Fort Worth, the Friars arrived in the diocese almost a decade ago to live out faithfully their consecrated life and actively serve the poor and those on the fringe of society.

Over the course of the past year, the Friars and Bishop Michael Olson have been in fruitful dialogue and evaluation about the Community’s work within the context of the pastoral plan of the diocese and the present needs of the Friars, in particular the outgrowing of the present Friary and the pressing need for a new building. After prayerful discernment, the mutual decision was made to complete the Friars mission in the diocese of Fort Worth.

Bishop Michael F. Olson of the Diocese of Fort Worth expressed his deep gratitude to the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal: “We are thankful to the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal for joining our efforts during the past eight years of prayers and outreach to help the homeless and marginalized at St. Benedict Mission. I am especially grateful for their love and devoted service to the poor among us.”

Fr. John Paul Ouellette, the Community Servant (Superior) of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal also expressed his gratitude: “We are profoundly grateful to Bishop Vann and Bishop Olson for their support and fatherly care over the past decade. Our Brothers are sincerely grateful for the tremendous privilege of serving the guests of St. Benedict's Mission and for the love and fidelity of the CFR lay associates and friends.”

The Friars will return to New York City following the solemn feast of the Most Holy Trinity in late May.
